![]() Rural life was difficult in America's frontier during the early 1800s. A bright woman, she encouraged Abe's education, and took his side in the frequent arguments the young boy had with his father. Thomas Lincoln married Sarah Bush Johnston shortly after Nancy's death, and young Abe immediately bonded with his stepmother. Although Lincoln later said that he owed everything to her guidance, he seldom mentioned her in his conversation or writings. Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks, died when Lincoln was only nine years old. Thomas built a crude 360-square foot log cabin where he lived with his wife, Abe, and elder daughter, Sarah. Himself born to impoverished parents, Thomas Lincoln was a farmer and carpenter who moved the family from rural Kentucky to frontier Indiana when young Abe was seven years old. He was a stern man whom young Abe never liked very much. His father, Thomas Lincoln, could not read and could barely sign his name. Abraham Lincoln was born in humble surroundings, a one-room log cabin with dirt floors in Hardin County, Kentucky. “It’s something in here (points to heart) once you get a hold of it,” Beever said.The man who preserved the Union and issued the Emancipation Proclamation came into the world on February 12, 1809. Opening a history book or listening to a story will never be able to reciprocate the emotion felt while walking through the cabin. The experience felt by Lincoln Log Cabin is like no other. “You need to feel that, I don’t really know how to explain it.” I would tell people to come out here to absorb what’s out here,” Beever said. Acknowledging the heritage in a place where history is honored allows visitors to fathom its prominence. However, many people neglect the impact of our history as well as its importance. ![]() The personnel on site returned to the cabin to work after visiting it at some point during their life. History is treasured within the organization. Volunteers all throughout the site attest to the notion of how much society can learn from our history. “There’s so much we can learn from history.” “I had gotten away from the historical aspect of things for a while and it hurt a little bit,” Beever said. Being away from such a historically rich and valuable place affected him personally to the point of his return. ”Īfter devoting seven years as an interpreter, Beever returned in January of 2022 to the place of his felicity as a volunteer. “I was very interested in history, always have been,” Beever said. Interpreters build a fireplace to be fully engrossed in the 1845 lifestyle on June 30th at Lincoln Log Cabin State Historical Site. ![]() Working any job to provide for his family, Beever always appreciated our roots. “īeever, 69, moved to Mattoon in 1991 with his wife. “It was, it was really, ethereal I guess would be the best way to describe it. And as I’m walking away that fog started to lift, you could actually see everything,” volunteer and former interpreter Lance Beever said. However, Beever’s experience was life-changing and one he will never forget. Lance Beever was one of many interpreters at the cabin. Up the hill and to the sheep they went to begin their day. Going up the back of the building was the daily routine for many interpreters at the Lincoln Log Cabin in Lerna, Illinois. Lincoln Log Cabin: Forever ethereal in our hearts
